What An Identity Protection Service Can Do For You, And What To Look For In One
An identity protection service is designed to give you a degree of protection against identity theft and fraud. Each of the major credit reference agencies has a different scheme, and these can offer you a degree of protection in totally different ways. There are, of course, many ways you can reduce the risk of your information being compromised, but you can never eliminate the risk altogether. If you are an individual of substantial means with a good credit rating, then it may be worth looking at a combination of these schemes.
It goes without saying that wealthy people are at a far greater risk of having their identities stolen. While some criminals who are just after any identity which they can put on a fake passport, financial criminals want to quickly take out loans using the identity they have stolen. There is no point, from their point of view, in taking risks stealing the identities of poor people with damaged credit ratings who would not qualify for loans anyway.
That is not to say that no financial criminal will ever be interested in a poor person's data. Most poor people will still have three figure sums in their bank accounts from time to time. It is just that the big prizes, for the criminals, are gained from the credit ratings of wealthy people. If your credit rating is substantial, there is much to be gained from stealing your information, so guard it carefully. At the very least, make sure any paperwork which you throw away is shredded first. It is a good idea to separate two halves of a sensitive document, shred them, and then dispose of the two halves separately.
You can pay for premium services which will send you emails based on any suspicious activity on your account. Whether this will give you enough time to react to the situation is another matter. You can also pay for a service which will supposedly search suspected underground Internet sites to see if it can find your details. If it could, you would at least be alerted to the fact that you were in very serious danger, and you would have a chance to react to that danger. Identity theft insurance can be bought in many different places, and can give you some peace of mind for a relatively low premium.
Whether you take out these kind of plans depends very much on your own personal circumstances. There are ways of reducing risk for free which everyone should be following, such as having multiple accounts, spreading their money, and not keeping all of their cards together in one place so that they are nicely packaged for a thief. It is also vital to ensure that you are aware of the online risks, and follow sensible procedures. Beyond this, if you are still concerned, you can gain increased protection from an identity protection service.
