How To Save Your Assets With Online Identity Protection

Online identity protection is a vitally important consideration in the modern world, and it is one which has deterred countless potential online shoppers from even trying to buy goods on the Internet. This is something of an over-reaction, as the risks involved in online shopping are, in fact, less than those associated with buying goods offline using plastic cards. If you are worried about identity security issues, and you should at least be concerned by them, you need to get your offline security right first.

To minimize the risk of having your accounts looted by criminals in the event that your information is compromised, consider taking out a protection plan. Whether you do this or not, you can cut the risk by making sure that you carry contact numbers for your service providers so that if your cards are lost or stolen, you can get in touch with them straight away. Obviously, you need to carry this in a place separate from your cards! If you have taken out a protection plan, software will make this process even quicker and easier.

Once you have added as much security as you can to your offline activities, you can think about how online and offline are linked. For example, if you have a PayPal account, anyone who manages to somehow get hold of your password can loot your account and spend your money. If, however, you have a bank account attached to the PayPal account, they can loot this as well, because the PayPal account will charge the bank account automatically if there is not enough money there. Make sure that you keep low amounts in PayPal, but also be wary of keeping any large amount of money in any linked bank account.

Online security breaches tend to come from either spam emails pretending to be from financial institutions, or from spoof web pages which pretend to be from an official site, but which are not. Often, the two are combined together in an attempt to get someone to reveal private information. If you are going to be typing important information into a web form, the first precaution is to type the site's URL directly into the browser. This eliminates the possibility of you being sent to a spoof site through clicking a link. Secondly, be sure that the browser URL says “https” and not just “http”.

Online banking is now a necessary feature for banks to offer if they are to attract customers, but the system needs to be made as secure as possible. There has been an advance in this area which now helps people to identify a spoof site. Many of the world's biggest banks now operate a system where the user selects a combination of a picture and phrase, and that is displayed to them after they have logged in, but before they type in their password. This provides a welcome extra layer of online identity protection.
