What You Can Do To Prevent Identity Theft

While there is no certain way to prevent identity theft, there are steps which can be taken to vastly reduce your potential exposure to it. It all starts with the realization that your identity and information are seen as valuable assets by a certain criminal element who will use them for their own ends. Once you understand this, you can take steps to make it much harder for the criminals to access your vital data. The most obvious of all the steps you can take is simply to stop being careless with your paperwork.

In the modern world, we are deluged with mail. Some of it useful and necessary, and some of it annoying and useless. So many of us just throw junk mail into the bin without another thought, and many of us do not exercise care even when disposing of sensitive information. Identity thieves do search through trash cans looking for sensitive information, especially in well-to-do neighborhoods. Getting the bank details of a person with a good credit score can allow the criminal to quickly borrow large amounts of money.

Get into the habit of destroying all paperwork that you need to throw out. Shredders are very inexpensive these days, so get hold of one. Make sure that it becomes a routine to shred all unwanted paperwork. Anything which is absolutely sensitive, like the letter the bank will send you advising you of a new PIN number, can be disposed of even more carefully. Cut the crucial part of the letter in half, shred the halves, and dispose of them in different places.

Passwords and PINs are like gold dust to the criminals, so protect them as fastidiously as possible. Never make the classic mistake of writing your PIN down and keeping it in your purse or wallet. It sounds obvious, but you wouldn't believe how many people make such an easy to prevent error. If you are ever asked to divulge a password or PIN, by someone purporting to be from the bank or the police, you are almost certainly being challenged by a criminal. Real bank employees would never ask for this kind of information, and is very rare that police would either.

Although many people are wary of Internet commerce, it is in fact safer than shopping in the offline world. Because of the strength of the encryption used in secure socket layer technology, the criminals can only get your information by tricking it out of you. If you are wise to the methods being used to try to get you to reveal your data, by sending fake emails and creating spoof websites, you can spot the attempts easily. Taking the time to study the methodologies employed by the criminals, and learning how to spot them, is the surest way to prevent identity theft.
