The Steps We Can All Take To Stop Identity Theft
Stop identity theft. It is a dream which ever greater numbers of people are having, as they fall victim to one of the most unpleasant side effects of our modern computerized world. From an individual's point of view, it is something of an impossible dream, as there is no way to get control over what an organization does with your data once they have it on their machines. There have been many incidents of careless employees of banks, insurance companies, and even government departments disposing of computers and equipment carelessly.
Despite this, of course, there is much that you can do for yourself. Still, the vast majority of all identity theft and fraud cases are caused by carelessness on behalf of the individual concerned. Protecting yourself to the optimum possible degree comes down to three factors. Firstly, you need to control how you access and store crucial information. Secondly, you need to look at how you dispose of sensitive documents, and, finally, you need to examine the way you behave online.
Everyone has the job of managing sensitive data to some degree. Even people who never use the Internet still need some kind of bank account. These accounts will almost certainly come with a card which will need a four digit PIN number. These should ideally be memorized, but most people feel a need to make some kind of written record. If you do, make sure that you use a system of code which will not make sense to anyone else finding the note. Do not carry this note with the cards unless your memory is so bad that you simply have to.
Disposing of sensitive documents is a lot more simple, and yet there are still a great many careless people taking unnecessary risks. With the price of shredders being as low as it is, there is really no need to be taking these risks. Many commentators will advise you to shred any piece of paper which contains personal information, even if it just your name and address. There is certainly no harm in doing this. A paper which contains extremely sensitive information should probably be cut in half, and the shreds of the two halves disposed of separately.
Doing business online is actually less risky than buying goods in a shop using a credit card. Modern encryption is so sophisticated that it basically eliminates the possibility of the information being intercepted and fraudulently used. The main risk to the consumer comes from fake emails pretending to be from a reputable source, and copied websites which look like the real thing, but which are set up to send information to a fraudulent email address. These problems can be overcome by looking for the “https” in the browser window, and by always typing the URL into the browser, rather than clicking a link. Online, these precautions will allow you to stop identity theft.
